My friend Jesse and I did a project on the reaction caused when you mix sugar and baking soda and then light it on fire. To make the project more of an experiment we used two different starting fluids, Rubbing Alcohol and Lighter fluid, as well as different kinds of sugar and sugar substitutes. First we learned about each type of sugar we used (White Sugar, Brown Sugar, Icing Sugar, Raw Sugar, Splenda and Equal) then we made our hypothesis. We then measured out the sugar and baking soda, as well as the lighter fluid and rubbing alcohol. We took them outside and added these to a plate of sand and my mom started them on fire. We wrote down what we saw, then compared it to our hypothesis. Our hypothesis was mostly wrong! But we had fun learning.
